Cosmetic surgeons have different explanations for the increase in procedures for men and few seem to agree on a leading reason. Some surgeons think that the original reason there is an increase in plastic or cosmetic surgery for men is that men are becoming more aware of the relationship between appearance and confidence. With many industries being highly competitive, men are equating success with self-confidence and their physical appearance, leading more men to seek plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery.
Men in sales, entertainment, and other careers are looking for professional help to maintain or improve their appearance. Some industries that are seeing the largest spike in procedures are: real estate, advertising sales, entertainment, and marketing.
The fact that it has become less taboo for men to get plastic or cosmetic surgery is also being pointed to as a catalyst in the increase of procedures for men. Recently men have taken their appearance more seriously and that is evident in increases in sales of men's apparel, fashion magazines, grooming products, and cosmetic and plastic surgery. Men of all backgrounds are taking their appearance more seriously and the related industries are taking notice.
The procedures men are undergoing parallel many of the procedures women are undergoing. In place of breast augmentation, men are getting pectoral implants, and other types of implants. Facelifts, tummy tucks, liposuction, and other procedures are also being received by men in larger numbers than before.
